Alberta: compare the contract behind the headline rate.

The cents-per-kWh offer is one part of a plan. Administration charges, contract terms and your usage determine how the comparison works for you.

THE TAKEAWAY

Compare the same annual usage and include the fees you would actually pay.

Use an independent starting point

The Alberta Utilities Consumer Advocate provides a cost comparison tool. Use it to explore offers for your location, then check the retailer’s own contract and current terms. Record the date of the offer so an old screenshot does not become your decision’s only source.

Put fixed fees beside the energy rate

Imagine Plan A at 0.10 per kWh plus 10 a month, and Plan B at 0.11 plus 5 a month. At 300 kWh, those components total 40 and 38. At 900 kWh, they total 100 and 104. The cheaper option changes with usage. This is an illustrative comparison, not a current offer.

Ask what is fixed

Read what the quoted price applies to, how long it lasts and which other charges can change. Compare cancellation conditions, credits, bundled-service requirements and renewal arrangements. A fixed energy price is not the same thing as a fixed total bill.

Stress-test the decision

Run the comparison using a low-use month, a high-use month and your annual total. If a price can vary, use several possible prices instead of assuming the last bill’s price lasts forever. Save the quote and the assumptions with your calculation.

Your next four steps.

  1. Use the UCA tool for your location.
  2. Include administration charges.
  3. Read renewal and cancellation terms.
  4. Compare multiple usage levels.
