Hot water, lower electricity: the heat pump question.
Water heating is a year-round load. Before comparing equipment prices, compare the energy needed to deliver the same hot water.
Compare annual kWh, installation conditions and total installed cost together.
What changes inside the tank?
A heat pump water heater draws heat from the surrounding air and moves it into stored water. Many units also have electric resistance elements for periods of high demand. The operating mode matters: an estimate based entirely on heat pump operation can be too optimistic if resistance backup runs frequently.
Start with the label, then your household
Compare energy labels for models with suitable tank and first-hour capacity. A larger household, unusual draw pattern or a cold installation space may perform differently from the standardized label conditions. Keep the same household demand on both sides of your comparison.
A worked example you can change
Suppose one option uses 3,200 kWh a year and another uses 1,200 kWh under comparable conditions. The difference is 2,000 kWh. At an energy price of 0.18 per kWh, that is 360 currency units a year. An additional installed cost of 1,800 would take five years to recover in this simplified example. These are illustrative inputs, not a product rating or promised saving.
Check the room before buying
Ask the installer about airflow, ambient temperature, condensate drainage, noise, clearances and electrical requirements. Because the unit takes heat from its surroundings, its effect on the home’s space heating and cooling deserves attention. Confirm a rebate before subtracting it from the purchase cost.
Your next four steps.
- Photograph the existing model and energy label.
- Compare models at the same useful capacity.
- Ask for an itemized installed quote.
- Model your own energy price and backup use.
Put the idea into numbers.
