What will an EV really add to your home electricity bill?

Start with how far you drive, not the size of the battery. A monthly charging estimate follows the electricity that leaves the wall.

Match your units

Use kilometres with kWh per 100 kilometres, or miles with kWh per 100 miles. Multiplying a miles-based distance by a kilometre-based consumption figure gives the wrong answer. Vehicle displays and specifications do not always use the same unit.

Account for charging losses

The energy reaching the battery is less than the energy taken from the outlet. The calculator divides battery demand by the charging efficiency. For example, 90% efficiency means 100 kWh at the battery requires about 111 kWh from the wall.

Model the hours you will actually charge

If you have a time-of-use tariff, the relevant price is the one applying during charging. Compare the cost of your full household plan before switching; cheaper overnight charging may come with more expensive daytime electricity.

Keep installation separate

Running cost does not include a charger, electrical work, permits or a potential service upgrade. Ask an appropriate local professional to assess the installation. Equipment capacity and safety cannot be established by an energy-cost calculator.

Put the idea into numbers.
